In the last three of AFF Cup Finals, there are statistics that say the team which lost the first leg Final can never be a champion. Include in the final of AFF Cup 2004, when Garuda was subdued to Singapore in the 1st leg Final by the score 1-3 in GBK, Senayan. Then the second leg final in Singapore, Garuda was again defeated by a score of 2-1. Then Singapore was the champion for AFF Cup 2004.
Meanwhile, in the next edition of the AFF Cup Final 2007, Singapore became champion again by conquered Thailand with aggregate 3-2. The first leg final match, Singapore beat Thailand by 2-1 in Singapore. While the second leg final match was held in Thailand with a score as strong 1-1.
The next year, AFF Cup Final 2008 still showed the same tradition. The Vietnamese managed to come out as champion by defeating previous finalist, Thailand. The total aggregate score is 3-2 to Vietnam winning. In the first match, Vietnam beat Thailand 2-1 when Thailand was as the host. Then, the second match Vietnam confirmed the AFF Cup 2008 Winners with Thailand holding by 1-1.
It seems that the AFF Cup Final tradition is very strong. Look back at Garuda that had been defeated to Malaysia with a landslide score 3-0. Even if Garuda could provide resistance in the second leg match, it will be very difficult to reach even more figure 3-0. Malaysia will not simply hand over the victory that has been achieved with a great difficulty there.
Irfan Bachdim-17 says that, “Winners never quit’. Bambang Pamungkas-20 also gave encouragement to his colleagues. In his personal website, BP20 convey there is still a chance of 90 minutes in Jakarta and Garuda can still win.
Perhaps the victor can be achieved, but was there any point of champion if the score in second leg was 1-0, or 2-0, or 2-1, or even 3-2. With a condition like that, although Garuda win the game but it can’t change the existing final tradition. Then the tradition will become stronger to say that the team which lost in the first leg will fail come out as champions again.
Come on Garuda! Tradition is not something that should stand for granted. With a burning passion and a fantastic play, it is not impossible to bring home the AFF trophy while Garuda giving a result of a new tradition.
